Always been aware and sensitive to the art around us, though often ‘official’ art is easy to overlook, terribly dated and innocuous. I was ignorant and oblivious. That I was. Here in Charlottesville we are living everyday a wake up to what the monuments around us are for, about, how they came to be and why they persist. I remember scoffing when we came to visit before moving here - the giant statue to traitor Robert E Lee seemed a sad joke, a relic that no one could take seriously. Which was probably largely the case during the times a couple decades ago as our country became more liberal following the civil rights era but with the resurgent of hate stirred up by those who wish to do harm to our country, these stupid statues a couple blocks from where we live are back in the spotlight.
This is new to me but what a moving and fitting artwork it is, at UNC.
