Time is money; we’ve heard that before. Goes for artists, too. No, I am not retired. (maybe I should color my hair? Cover the gray? :-D ) I’ve worked in the gig economy almost all of my career - that means no benefits, no pension, capeesh? I cannot afford to give my work or time away. My time is valuable - years of experience can create a better design solution and probably quicker. A comment I often receive is about how fast I am. Yeah, true - that’s what experience produces.
Just did a little googling around - plumber $150 initial consultation, hourly rate 75 - 120/hour; auto mechanic 90-110/hour; tutor 90 - 140/hour; attorney 400/hour. My hourly rate of $75 might need to increase. *note - costs ave increased for me, as well as most of us - these genius tariffs have raised some materials price by 10% so far, and shipping has increased quite a bit. Amazon eats the shipping increases, btw and that makes everyone else look bad. When you are the richest individual on the planet, I suppose it is not a big deal but for me, it kinda is.
So, please consider when you ask an artist to give away their work. Do you ask that of your plumber, mechanic, attorney? Or to work for free, or for a ‘portfolio piece.’ We really don’t need anymore portfolio pieces, thank you very much.
