Charlottesville has a wonderful Saturday market. For most of the year it is primarily a farmer's market, but there's a good smattering of crafts and handmade goods. I occasionally get up before dawn and spend the day vending. Some market days are more lucrative than others, and weather is a huge factor but I almost always am completely happy to have whiled away the day chatting other with vendors, seeing friends, meeting interesting people visiting from other states or other countries and selling my work. Other days I am just tired from getting up so early ;-) The City staff has made the market into a real highlight of the weekend in our little city. The range of vendors and products has only improved over the years. I cherish the acquaintances I have made there, especially some of the older lifelong residents of the area who bring products not commonly seen - paw paws and creasy greens come to mind. There is a younger generation of farmers from whom we have purchased meat and eggs and vegetables and there comes with the fresh produce the faces of the people the names of their farms and their livestock. I buy a lot at the market. Must keep in mind that the point is to make more money than I spend ;-) - however I do get the family's groceries for the week, and sometimes an entire meal. Today was the last market of the season. See you in 2017!
